Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles

Window handles are a fundamental component of uPVC frames and should match the frame. The spindle size is what determines if the new uPVC handles will fit.
Use the table below as a quick reference to determine the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will ensure that you purchase the right replacement window handle for your double glazed window.
Espag Handle
Espag handles are the most commonly used type of handle that is found on windows made of Upvc (they're also often used in timber and aluminium too). The handles feature a square spindle which extends from the handle's back and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism of the window. The handle is used to control the locking mechanism around the window.
Espag window handles are available in a variety of different options that vary depending on the style you select and the purpose you want from them. Some feature the option of a push button to lock them in a locked closed position and key-locking. (And nonlocking against fire in the event of need.) Many of them meet the Secure by design specification for an extra level of security. They also come with a variety of spindle sizes that can be adjusted by using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the protruding spindles.
The espagnolette handles we offer have been tested by Yale to ensure they are up to the standards you would expect from such a brand and are suitable for timber, upvc and aluminum windows. We have a selection of colours available, as well as the option of matching the handle to your existing hinges.
The step height is an additional important aspect of espagnolette handle. This is the distance from the bottom of the handle up to where it sits on the frame, and it's crucial to ensure it's in order to ensure a secure and tight fit. Most of our handle designs are 43mm between screw hole centres, which is the industry standard.
As with other types of handles you can choose between straight and cranked designs. Cranked handles are a good choice in situations where the espagnolette handle is located close to the frame's edge. They allow you more room to open the window.
Our range of upvc replacement handles includes a variety of styles, finishes and colors to match your home's decor, such as polished chrome, antique brass and satin nickel. Some of our handles come with soft-close technology to lessen the sound your windows make when they shut.
Cockspur Handle
The Cockspur Window Handle was created for fabricators who want to provide their customers with an elegant and premium design. These handles are compatible with uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They function by using a spur that locks over the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle can be locked so that it opens only when pushed, providing additional security. The handle comes in 5 different finishes with both left hand and right hand versions allowing the fabricator to accommodate a greater selection of windows.
The cockspur window handles come equipped with three packing pieces of different thickness, which allows them to be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of backset sizes. Each packer can be removed from the handle's nose or added to the size of the step to get the desired distance between 9mm and 21mm. The handle is also available in left and right handed versions and with a straight or curved nose option.
It is important to measure the height of your current handle before purchasing a new handle to ensure it will fit correctly. A wrong handle can cause a range of issues, such as the inability for the window to be shut. This could be a headache for homeowners and create unnecessary stress.
A cockspur is a handle used on older uPVC, timber and aluminium windows. These handles do not have any window locks integrated unlike Espag handles that are used on modern windows and include a shootbolt or Espagnolette bar lock.
The espagnolette (often reduced to "espag") handle is the most common handle type that can be used on the new uPVC casement windows. When you turn the handle of the espagnolette it activates a Yale Encloser locking system which is much more secure than the traditional handle, such as a cockspur or British standard. This is due to the fact that the espagnolette handle turns multiple locks to secure the window frame.
Handle by turning and tilting
These windows are popular with people who want to improve the amount of airflow inside their home as well as add a layer of security. Like their name implies they have a tilt and turn feature that allows them to tilt at 90 degrees to create a small opening, or drop down to a hopper style for complete ventilation. This dual functionality also gives them a unique appearance which can add a real wow factor to your double glazed window.
Tilt-and-turn windows are more complicated than other double-glazed window styles that can increase the cost of installation. They require more parts and require more labor. However, these windows are worth the investment as they can add value to your property and offer a variety of advantages.
One of the major benefits is that they allow you to clean your windows from inside without the need for ladders outside. This is ideal for people who live high up in buildings or flats, as it doesn't require you to be concerned about falling from the height. Tilt and turn windows also offer added security as the window locks when in a tilted position and in this way, ensuring that any intruders are unable to open them from inside.
Most often, you'll see handles like this typically on European style windows, especially those in Germany However, you can also find them installed in UK homes. The uPVC handle replacement is usually an a spindle-based model. It uses 7mm spindles that are available in sizes of 38mm, 44mm and 32mm. The base of the handle also tends to be wider than the majority of handles. This is why they are referred to as a tilt safe window handle as it is only able to be turned to open the window after it is locked in either a closed or tilt position.
If you are replacing a uPVC tilt and turn window handle it is necessary to remove the existing handle from the window by using an screwdriver. The screws are usually concealed behind a sprung-loaded backplate. Simply lift the backplate and twist it until you can see two screw holes. You can determine the distance between the two screw holes using an instrument such as a ruler or tape measurement device. This is typically 43mm from the centre to the centre. Once you have the measurement you can then select the appropriate size handle to fit your uPVC windows.
